Cocoa and Acne

Cocoa or Cacao is prized for its natural nutritional benefits. It is high in Magnesium and this definitely has benefits. However if you are acne prone you are best to get your magnesium from other sources such as nuts.
?
Whether or not chocolate causes acne has been a huge debate. It is known without a doubt that dairy and sugar definitely are causative factors in aggravation, but what is not well known is that Cacao is an issue as well.
?
Cacao is used in dark chocolate and with the advent of sugar free cooking books emerging, cacao is a component used frequently in these recipes. Whilst is has health benefits, if you are acne prone you need to avoid it. A study publised in the Journal of Clinical Aesthetic Dermatology in 2014 found that cocoa or cacao consumption is detrimental to those who are acne prone.
?
A double-blind, placebo study examined the effect of cocoa consumption on acne lesion exacerbation. Fourteen men between the ages of 18 and 35 were assigned to swallow capsules filled with either unsweetened 100-percent cocoa, hydrolyzed gelatin powder, or a combination of the two.
?
The number of pimples and blackheads/whiteheads were assessed and photographed at the beginning, day 4 and day 7. They were give only one tablet containing cocoa or cacao only to see the effect on the skin.
?
What they found was that a ONE TIME consumption of cocoa actually increases the amount of pimples by 2.5 times by day 4. The number of blackheads and whiteheads was also nearly 2.5 times more but at day 7 it was closer to nearly 3 times as more blackheads and whiteheads.
?
So if you are acne prone and putting cocoa in your smoothies or in your diet you are literally tripling your amount of acne. Simply removing it will decrease your acne massively.

No Peels???

Chemical peels are performed by many Estheticians and Doctors. At Roccoco we don’t believe in them. To us they are treating a symptom and not a cause. Therefore, in our eyes they are not holistic and don’t fit with our philosophy on skin.
?
The idea that removing skin cells fixes a problem is to us faulty thinking. The keratinocyte is the king of cellular communication. This little cell decides whether to mount an immune response, whether to dilate your capillaries and whether to generate repair.
?
Rather than removing them we believe your keratinocyte should remain until it naturally falls off. There isn’t any really any reason to peel.
?
The reasons used are:
1. Acne
2. Pigmentation
3. Ageing
?
Acne is inflammatory. Originally it was thought to be from hyper-proliferation of cells (which it has that feature), however newer research shows it actually begins with inflammation and that is the trigger for the overproduction of cells. You extinguish the inflammation you get rid of the over production of cells. The bonus is that it doesn’t create sun sensitivity or increased sensitivity which tends to happen with the use of acids.
?
Pigmentation occurs because the pigment is transferred to the keratinocyte, so the idea is to remove them which removes the pigment. Instead if you stop the transfer of pigment you eliminate the pigmentation. There is also ways of stopping the pigment being deposited in the first place.
?
Ageing isn’t from dead skin cells and whilst it may stimulate the production of collagen by peeling it also creates inflammation. Our philosophy is why peel when you can generate quicker and faster results without peeling and the process is holistic.
?
If you look at number 2 and 3 you will see it breaches the basal cell. Whilst your skin may look good at the time you will look worse in about 10-15 years time. The entire epidermis has been destroyed and will struggle to renew itself. This means your skin will start sagging.
?
It is for this reason that we at Roccoco are against peeling the skin. We treat acne from the first step. Peeling only treats from the second step.
